Drawing Breath
2 October 2004
A wonderful day with 2500 visitors enjoying a variety of drawing
activities devised by artist Anna Townley. The armoury was full of visitors
intently recording the details of weapons and helmets or thinking of new uses
for the armour. More close study and drawing took place in the china and
figurine collection, while Greek vases and pottery provided inspiration for
decorating paper cups. Drawing the decorative ceiling, without looking down at
the paper, provided a stimulating challenge, as did drawing a friend 'blind'.
In a gallery of portraits of people with bare feet, subjects were redrawn, shod
with fancy or bizarre footwear. Visitors could 'collect' eyes, draw themselves
with angel wings, or even use the portraits as a visual dating agency. Other
activities involved drawing a collection of secrets inside a paper bag, drawing
ghostly paintings or sounds. Ian Beck, a leading children's book author and
illustrator with Random House, led a popular story drawing workshop.
