The theme of The Royal Institution's String of Pearls Open House was the
visualisation of scientific thinking, part of the String of Pearl's Golden
Jubilee Festival.

The RI invited visitors to explore its historic setting, collections and
research laboratories as inspiration for their own drawings.

Guided tours and special trails spotlighted the RI's unique archives and public
displays of scientific drawings (from Michael Faraday to Lawrence Bragg).

Lively demonstrations in the renowned Lecture Theatre with
Dr Bryson Gore encouraged participants to explore ways in which scientific
experiments can be made visible and comprehensible.

David Gooding, Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at the University
of Bath, gave a fascinating lecture on 'Drawing Observed: The Art in Science'.

|
Dr Jonathan Hare, one of the participants of BBC's Rough Science team,
explained the basic scientific principles of his 'contraptions' made for the
recent series.

|
Leverhulme Trust Artist-in-residence Annie Catrell and Nesta Fellow multi-media
artist Andrew Stone were present to discuss their new work on view and helped
visitors create their own images.
