Finale event: Royal Institution of Great Britain

Royal Museum & Museum of Scotland

19 October 2002

Over 1100 visitors of all ages got creative in galleries and public spaces through the day. Subjects ranged from Ancient Eygpt to architecture, human portraiture to elephants and giraffes, and anotomy to archaeology. They projected huge images and made bright reproductions in felt tips, created lightning-quick charcoal sketches and collections-inspired cartoons, as well as collages of Super Mario for the youngest budding artists.

They were joined by Fionna Carlisle, Kate Charlesworth, Helen Denerley, George Donald, Kate Downie, Ron O'Donnell and George Wyllie. Kate Downie was busy all weekend making The Big Drawing, a giant 'sketchbook' page drawing of the Royal Museum's Main Hall, in the same proportions as her normal sketchbook is to her studio, and inspiring others to tackle the vast architecture in their own drawings. Her completed artwork was displayed on the floor of the Main Hall for the rest of the week as a reminder of the great day!

Imagination's Chamber 18 - 28 October Sponsored by Edinburgh City Council

Children and their parents flocked around Jonny Boatfield, children's author and illustrator, at the Royal Museum. Over 11 days his workshops inspired about 350 children to create their own imaginary characters, draw them and then write a little book about them.
